AI may have just solved a million-dollar math problem. The field will never be the same

RumorResearchSep 8, 2026

Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpoge, an Anthropic employee, proved that the Euler equations blow up, verifying the result with Lean. Buckmaster alleges that OpenAI, after rumors of their method, used an internal model to extend the approach to the Navier-Stokes equations, a Clay Millennium Prize problem. He says a call with OpenAI's math lead turned contentious over authorship. Buckmaster likened the moment to Gary Kasparov's loss to Deep Blue.
