AI Made A Lot Of "Hideous" Code But Found Major Bottlenecks For Faster Linux Compilation

ARM engineer Lorenzo Stoakes posted 23 patches to speed up Linux kernel builds by parallelizing single-threaded bottlenecks. Benchmarks show all-modules builds around 36% faster, incremental builds up to 70% faster, and noop builds up to roughly 90% faster. Stoakes said an unnamed LLM helped identify bottlenecks and generate code—much of it, in his words, "hideous"—which he manually audited and rewrote. Each commit carries an Assisted-by tag.
